M3U or Xtream Codes: which should you use?

When you set up a player you are usually offered two ways in: an M3U playlist URL, or an Xtream Codes login made up of a server URL, a username and a password. They are not the same thing.

What an M3U playlist gives you

An M3U file is a flat list of live channels and their stream addresses. It is universally supported - VLC will open one - and it is the quickest way to confirm your line works.

What Xtream Codes adds

The Xtream Codes API is a proper client-server protocol. On top of the live channels it exposes the on-demand catalogue, series with seasons and episodes, and structured guide data your player can display natively.

Which to choose

Use Xtream Codes wherever your player supports it. Keep the M3U URL for testing, for VLC, and for the few apps that accept nothing else.

Keep both private

Either form carries your credentials. Anyone you share them with is using your connections, and repeated sharing will exhaust them. Treat the URL as you would a password.
